Wild Ground

‘Wild Ground’ brings together bold abstraction and grounded realism to explore the raw beauty of Canadian landscapes and cityscapes under shifting, moody skies.

Loretta Kaltenhauser, an established, award-winning Canadian artist, presents works that move fluidly between abstraction and landscape. Through a process of layering, subtraction, and manipulation of acrylic paint using brushes and palette knives, Kaltenhauser builds intricate compositions charged with energy. Her evolving surfaces reveal traces of emotion and intuition, where colour and form take on lives of their own, echoing the restless dynamics of both city and land.

Darlene Winfield, an award-winning Canadian contemporary painter, captures atmosphere through raw yet elegant brushwork and a refined, personal colour palette. Working primarily in oil, Winfield constructs her paintings in layered passages where dramatic gestures are balanced by moments of stillness. Depth, mood, and spatial tension are central to her practice, inviting viewers to enter the painted world and linger within its quiet intensity. Her reverence for the material history of oil painting is evident in each work, where surface and sensation are inseparable.

Together, Kaltenhauser and Winfield reveal a shared terrain, wild ground, where nature persists, cities breathe, and the landscape remains powerful, unsettled, and alive.
