This workshop is a continuation of Light and Shadow Workshop 1; it is also open to more advanced students. As in the first workshop the focus continues to be to develop the understanding and application of the principles of light and shadow, or ‘chiaroscuro’, in order to achieve a sense of volume and realism in modeling three-dimensional objects. The medium will be charcoal pencil on paper.

This time the goal is to work from a more complex subject: plaster cast of a human head followed by working from a live model in order to create a portrait in charcoal. The workshop will continue with an intensive step by step delivery with students working closely with the instructor to achieve professional level results. No previous drawing experience is necessary for this workshop. All supplies will be provided to the students

Schedule

 Week 1 

  • Review of materials used in the class:charcoal pencil, compressed charcoal stick, smooth Strathmore paper (300 or 500), plastic eraser, kneaded eraser, and utility knife. - Light and shadow technique and materials: demonstration using pencil, eraser and cloth - Light and shadow sphere drawn from life and black/white handout image - anatomy of light and shadow 
  • Review of basics of light and shadow rendering: greyscale exercise, light and shadow study of simple object with instructor assistance 
  • Introduction to and beginning of plaster cast long drawing 
  • Photograph for each student of plaster cast 

Week 2 

  • Review of previous week’s work and lessons 
  • Rendering of the plaster cast setup will resume following the step by step method 
  • work from life model including taking photo reference. 

Week 3 

  • Review of previous week’s class 
  • Continuation of step by step rendering of plaster cast portrait head 
  • Beginning of work from life model and photo reference 

Week 4 

  • Continuation of work from life model and photo reference 
  • Class critique 

Week 5 

  • Continuation of work from life model and photo reference 
  • Class critique 

Instructor

Jørgen Lauritzen

As a Sheridan College professor for over twenty years Jorgen has taught all aspects of painting, drawing and design from beginner to advanced. In doing so his goal has been to demythologize the teaching of art by breaking it down to fundamental parts, thereby making it accessible to anyone. Of primary importance to his teaching methodology is that once students have developed their skills they are then encouraged to realize their artistic identity and from there the direction necessary to build a coherent body of work. Many of Jorgen's students have gone on to realize careers in the fine and applied arts.
